Culture, nature and light: these three elements provide the structure for this exploration of the mind and heart of one of the world's master architects, Chinese-American I. M. Pei (b. 1917). The film focuses on his latest work: the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. He was nearly 90 years old when he accepted the commission, perhaps his toughest yet. "Very frankly, I didn't feel qualified ... my acceptance was conditional, based on my learning something about the history of Islam." The film takes us to Cordoba and the Alhambra in Grenada, Spain, and then to Cairo, in search of reference points to fully understand Pie's architecture. For months, Pei steeped himself in Islamic architecture, hoping to capture its essence, deriving inspiration in particular from the Ahmed Ibn Touloun mosque in Cairo. "Islamic architecture has a desert origin, and therefore it has a certain modesty I don't want to lose." Already, the new Museum of Islamic Art has been dubbed the "Louvre of the Middle East," and after opening its doors to the public in November 2008, it has been hailed as an architectural world wonder, a fitting showcase for one of the world's finest collections of Islamic art.
